Right hand item is for attacking.
Left hand item is either a shield or a focus.

Ordinary right hand items just deal damage, ordinary foci just give mana. Sometimes, they have innate abilities on them when they're dropped like "10% chance protection spells recharge faster" and stuff like that.

Purple items are enchanted items just like blue and gold items.

Purple items are rarer however, and tend to have more OR better stats then a blue item, and gold are even more rare then the purple, also tend to be slightly better in one way or another then purple.

This is not always the case, stat wise, but usually is.

And to the point, you must have the attribute and skill level requirement for that item to be effective.

Example: Healing Anke Energy +6 (requires +6 Healing attribute). If you dont have 6 point in Healing Attributes you wont get the benefit.

If you get a really good item don't sell it right away. You may meet a friend who could use it!
